Study Description
1030 PTSS among Physically Injured Youth
Glenn Saxe
This study addressed posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) over time among youths who had experienced physical injuries. Participants were children and adolescents age 6 - 18 years, admitted to 2 hospitals for physical injuries. Youths and their parents completed measures of PTSS, internalizing and externalizing problems, and prior stressor exposure during the hospital stay; youths completed up to 3 additional PTSS assessments targeted at 3, 6, and 12 months postinjury.

Youths who were admitted to the hospital for physical injuries during the study period were eligible to participate if they and their parents spoke sufficient English, as reflected in parents’ capacity to provide consent, youth’s capacity to provide assent, and facility of parents and youths to complete study measures without assistance from an interpreter. For feasibility of follow-up, only individuals who lived within a 2-hr travel distance from the hospital were eligible.
Children or adolescents with severe head injury, indicated by Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score less than or equal to 7 upon admission, were excluded.
