Abstract

The broad objective of this research project was to reduce the morbidity associated with pediatric traffic-related injury by identifying key risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in injured children and their parents so that this knowledge can be incorporated into diagnostic and treatment strategies. The study enrolled a prospective cohort of children admitted to a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center for treatment of traffic-related injury (e.g ,as passengers, pedestrians, or bicyclists). These data are from children age 5 to 7 years at time of injury.

The specific aims of this study were to: Aim 1. Determine the prevalence of PTSD in children and their parents/guardians after pediatric traffic-related injuries; Aim 2. Determine the contribution of several specific risk factors for the development of PTSD after pediatric traffic-related injuries; Aim 3. Develop and validate a PTSD risk assessment screening tool for use in the acute medical care setting.

Inclusion criteria

Children age 5 - 7 admitted to hospital for treatment of traffic-related injury.

Exclusion criteria

Cognitive limitations or English-language skills preclude participation in study assessments , or lived beyond a 2-hour travel distance from the hospital (follow-up assessments were done in child's home).
